University of Maryland-College Park’s annual debate tournament this past

2) World news roundup

* The United States will release a small number of detainees from the naval
base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and allow them to return to Pakistan in the
near future, according to CNN. US policy allows for detainees to be released
if they are no longer a threat to national security and if they do not have
useful information. Details of the transfer will not be officially announced
until after it is completed, and some detainees have requested that their
names not be mentioned because they fear that they will be targeted by al
Qaeda and the Taliban.

* A suicide bomber in Israel detonated a vehicle full of explosives
alongside a passenger bus in Karkur Junction today, killing 14 and wounding
more than 50. The bus was traveling between Tel Aviv and Haifa when it
caught fire as a result of the explosion. The Islamic Jihad organization
claimed responsibility for the attack. Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser
Arafat denounced the attack saying, “We are condemning completely these
terrorist activities against civilians, be they Israeli civilians, be they
Palestinian civilians.”

* The US Supreme Court decided on Monday not to consider the issue of
executing criminals for crimes they committed under the age of 18 during
this session. The issue has been brought up more and more frequently in
recent years, and the court just voted last session to declare
unconstitutional the execution of mentally retarded persons. There is
another case that the court has not yet decided whether it should consider
regarding the constitutionality of inmates remaining on death row for more
than 20 years before being executed.

* King Harald of Norway was caught speeding in his private car in Oslo last
weekend. Normally the offense would result in a fine of approximately
$130US, but the Norwegian constitution exempts the monarch from prosecution
for crimes and misdemeanors.
