Sad news for WSR aficianados: Although we did receive some feedback from
staunch defenders of the World Sports Roundup, the overall response was not
enough to counteract the message clearly sent by last year’s survey. Thus,
the Gazette staff has chosen to pull the section permanently–but rest
assured, we will continue to keep you updated on major sports stories
through our World News Roundup.

WEATHER FORECAST

Today: Mostly sunny early with increasing clouds later. High around 88.
I think “welcome weekend” was an inspired idea, but the hypnotist got it
backwards.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Low near 67.
It’s not the students who should be hypnotized, but the professors who
assign all the work.

Tomorrow: Partly cloudy but clearing later. High around 86.
Now *that* would give us a welcome weekend.

TODAY’S SHARPLES MENU

Lunch: Chicken nuggets, curly fries, tofu joe, baked penne with mushrooms,
corn, spinach, cheese steak bar.

Dinner: Tilapia with shrimp & scallop sauce, rice pilaf, spicy peanut
noodle, Indian style chick peas, broccoli, cauliflower, picnic bar.

NEWS REPORT

1) Bag lunch program extended to five days per week

by Jeremy Schifeling
Gazette Section Editor

Fans of Dining Services’ bag lunch program will now be able to “brown bag
it” Monday to Friday. The service, which had previously been a
Tuesday-Thursday affair only, will begin its expansion today, according to
Linda McDougall, Director of Dining Services.

McDougall says that the new schedule will introduce “a few exciting new
sandwiches,” such as Chicken Caesar Wraps and Seafood Salad, as well as
some old-time favorites like Hummus on Pita and Special Pasta Salad. (For
the full line-up, check out the schedule below)

In addition to the expansion of the bag lunch program, Dining Services is
also offering a number of other changes this semester. As was announced
last spring, students now have the option of participating in a 17-meal
plan (
http://daily.swarthmore.edu/archive/spring_2002/20020409.html#n1).

Additionally, there is now a “new wok/omelette station near the back door
of Sharples, complete with a sink and soap,” according to Scott Tutton, of
Dining Services.

“At a meeting with students towards the end of last year, several
vegetarians expressed a concern over using the woks and omelette pans after
meat had been in them,” said Tutton. “The washing station was an answer to
their requests.”

And while there are plenty of changes this year, some things remain the
same. For instance, Tutton reminds students that Sharples still closes
earlier on the weekends (6:30 p.m.). And of course, don’t be tempted to
abscond with silverware and plates!

“It makes it very difficult to keep the servery stocked for other students
if everyone is taking them [silverware and plates] back to their dorm,”
said Tutton. “True, we do usually get most of the stuff back–eventually.
The problem is serving in the meantime. And the beginning of the year is
the busiest, making it more crucial.”

2) World news roundup

* In a coordinated effort, Vice President Cheney and other national
security advisors urged an attack on Iraq today. Using the example of
September 11 to show the extent of the threat to the United States by an
unchecked Saddam Hussein, they urged Congress and the United Nations to
support whatever policies the U.S. decided to take. The officials said that
there was possible evidence connecting Saddam to the September 11
attackers, and that he could have coordinated further with other terrorist
groups in the past year. Such coordination, they said, could lead to the
accumulation of deadly biological and chemical weapons.

* Israeli tanks pushed into Gaza on Monday, sparking gun fights that
wounded three Palestinians. The attack came hours before the Palestinian
parliament was scheduled to meet. Yasser Arafat was expected to make a
speech to his parliament asking for suicide bombings to be made illegal and
for Palestine to seek peace with Israel.

* Pete Sampras became the winner of the U.S. Open on Sunday. This is Sampras’
14th major title, and at 31, he is the oldest player to win the U.S. Open
since
1970. He beat out his old rival, Andre Agassi, for the title.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Swarthmore men fall at home in tennis invitational

by Holice Kil
Gazette Sportswriter

In a two-day tennis tournament hosted by Swarthmore College over the
weekend, Swarthmore singles player Dave Gentry ’05 and doubles players
Brian Park ’06-Jayson Yost ’03 reached the final match of their respective
flights, only to fall to opponents from St. Joseph’s University.

Gentry beat out two opponents on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s Flight C
final, but then lost the match to Antonio Aniello (SJ) in straight sets:
6-2, 6-2.

In the doubles Flight A final, flashes of brilliant net play by Park and
strong serving by Yost allowed Swarthmore to hold serve for a while, but
they were unable to break Velasquez-Pangilinan (SJ), and they eventually
lost the match: 8-5.

Three schools participated in the Swarthmore College Fall Invitational: St.
Joseph’s University (Div. I), Franklin & Marshall College (Div. III), and
Swarthmore College (Div. III).

St. Joseph’s players dominated tournament play, representing their school
in all four singles finals and both the doubles finals. Gentry and
Park-Yost were the only non-St. Joseph’s contestants to compete in the
finals; no members of the Franklin & Marshall team advanced.

“It’s tough because seven of our twelve returning players are studying
abroad this semester,” Gentry said. “But already some of the freshmen are
some of our best players,” he added, “so I’m hopeful about the rest of the
season.”

———–
Complete singles finals results:
Flight A: Jimmy Holland (SJ) vs. Frank Velazquez (SJ) [6-3, 2-6, 4-6]
Flight B: Van Homer Pangilinan (SJ) vs. Greg Chang (SJ) [1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7)]
Flight C: Antonio Aniello (SJ) vs. Dave Gentry (SW) [6-2, 6-2]
Flight D: A.J. Garrabedian (SJ) vs. Jeff Olson (SJ) [6-1, 6-1]

Complete doubles finals results:
Flight A: Velasquez-Pangilinan (SJ) vs. Park-Yost (SW) [8-5]
Flight B: Cappelli-Aniello (SJ) vs. Chang-Speicher (SJ) [8-3]

2) Swat men’s soccer shuts out Valley Forge Christian College

Steve Pater ’05 scored the game winner early in the first half of the
Garnet’s 3-0 win over Valley Forge Christian College, their third victory
of  the season. Pater scored off an assist from freshman Charlie Taylor,
who scored several minutes later. Alex Elkins ’06 also scored, marking his
first career goal. The team will next play Baptist Bible at home on
Wednesday at  4:15 p.m.

3) Upcoming contests

Today:
There are no contests scheduled for today.
