1) World news roundup
John McCain pulled out of this week’s GOP presidential campaign debate, and
aides say they won’t take part because rival George W. Bush was slow to
agree to the California event and that sparked scheduling conflicts. …In
a letter to Cardinal John O’Connor, leader of New York’s Catholics, George
W. Bush said he “deeply” regretted “causing needless offense” by making a
campaign appearance at a South Carolina school with anti-Catholic views.
Bush came under criticism for not taking the opportunity to speak out
against the school’s views and its ban on interracial dating. …Tijuana’s
police chief was shot and killed Sunday, as assailants littered his car
with over 100 bullets as he drove along a busy highway. …Speaking
publicly for the first time since Friday’s verdict in the Amadou Diallo
shooting trial, in which four white New York police officers were acquitted
of all charges after they poured over 40 bullets into the unarmed,
“suspicious looking” black man, juror Helen Harder said the outcome was,
“not happy, but clear.”

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Track and Field records fall at Conference Championships
The women’s indoor track and field team finished 4th out of nine teams at
the Centennial Conference Championships at Haverford over the weekend.
Desiree Peterkin ’00 won the Triple Jump (35’4.5″) and Long Jump (17’3.5″).
Imo Akpan ’02 set a school and Conference record in the 55 dash trials
(7.32 sec). Joko Agunloye ’01 set a school record with a second place
finish in the 5000m (18:17.57) and 3rd place in the 3000 (10:40.81).
On the men’s side, the team finished 8th out of nine teams. Marc Jeuland
’01 set a school record with a 2nd place finish in the 5000 (15:20.87),
while Steve Dawson ’00 finished third in the high jump, clearing 6’4″.

2) Lacrosse wins thriller at Goucher
It took triple overtime, but the Garnet prevailed in their season opener at
Goucher College. Patrick Friel ’03 took a feed from Mark Dingfield ’01 and
scored with 14 seconds left in the third extra period to give Swat the 10-9
victory. John Murphy ’03 scored four goals and added an assist, while
Dingfield scored two and assisted four others. Than Court ’03 scored twice,
while Adam Dickinson ’00 and Friel each scored once. Sig Rydquist ’00
turned away seven shots in goal. The team’s record stands at 1-0 on the season.

3) Women ruggers tackle St. Johns
The women’s rugby team defeated St. Joseph’s 21-0 on Saturday. Elizabeth
Meehan ’01, Noelle Goodin ’00, and Meghan Brennan ’00 scored the tries and
Rhiana Swartz ’00 hit all three conversion kicks. B-side lost 0-21 against
much of St. Joe’s A-side.

4) World sports roundup
Darren Clarke defeated Tiger Woods 4 and 3 in Sunday’s 36-hole final of the
World Match Play Championship. They were all square after the first 18, but
Clarke won seven of the 15 holes the next time around to seal the victory.
…The NBA changed Sunday’s schedule last week so the Toronto Raptors game
could be broadcast live on NBC, and Vince Carter didn’t fail to disappoint
in his national television debut, scoring a career- and NBA season-high 51
points as Toronto defeated Phoenix 103-102.
