NEWS REPORT
1) Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society triumphs at UPenn tournament
The Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society traveled to the distant University of
Pennsylvania Tournament and returned with several awards. John Dolan ’01
and Princeton’s Emily Garrin finished as the 3rd place team
overall. Darius Ornston ’00 and Tenaya Scheinman ’01 were undefeated in
preliminary rounds, but lost in quarterfinals to finish as the 5th place
team. Novice debaters Rob Peterson ’03 and Jeremy Scheifeling ’03 placed
third in the novice division while Marvin Barron ’02 finished as the
fourth place novice speaker. The Debate Society will attend George
Washington University’s tournament December 3 and 4.

2) World news roundup
National Transportation Board investigators are working with Egyptian
authorities in Cairo on the EgyptAir Flight 990 crash investigation. The
joint team is concluding its translation of the contents of the cockpit
voice recorder, which is crucial to the probe. Egyptian officials say that
the US investigators should be wary of local sensitivities. …Russian
troops have almost completely encircled Grozny, where rebels are bracing
for a major offensive. Meanwhile, refugees are continuing to flee to the
neighboring republic of Ingushetia, despite bitter winds and snow. …Two
people died and more than 100 were injured after four buses full of Penn
State students crashed on a foggy interstate in Eastern
Pennsylvania. …Thousands of protesters marched onto Fort Benning,
Georgia on Sunday to protest human rights abuses committed by graduates of
the US Army’s School of the Americas. The annual demonstrations
commemorates the Nov. 16, 1989 killings in El Salvador of six Jesuit
priests, their housekeeper and her young daughter.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Women’s b-ball win consolation round in tournament
This weekend, the women’s basketball team hosted the Swarthmore Tip-Off
Tournament. On Saturday, the Garnet lost to Endicott 58-56, but came back
to beat Wesleyan 56-54 in the consolation round. The score was tied
with 22 seconds remaining when Heather Kile ’02 and
Heather Marandola ’01 hit free throws to win the game. Kile had 19 points
and 15 rebounds, Sarah Tufano ’03 had 17 points and 12 rebounds,
Marandola had 7 points, and Katie Tarr ’02 had 6 points. The team is now
1-1 on the season.

2) Men’s basketball plays Equinox Classic
The men’s basketball team defeated Heidelberg 76-61 Saturday in the
Equinox Classic tournament, but fell to Randolph Macon on Friday. Charlie
Brubaker ’02 led the team on Saturday with 20 points, and Gregg Holtmeier
’00 had 18. Both Brubaker and Holtmeier were named to the Equinox Classic
All-Tournament team.

3) Agunloye, O’Neill compete in national X-country championships
This weekend, Joko Agunloye ’01 and Liam O’Neill ’00 competed in the
NCAA national cross-country championships. Agunloye came in 70th out of
213 runners in the women’s race, and O’Neill placed 141st out of 212 in
the men’s race.

4) Swim teams host Washington & Lee
On Saturday, the men’s and women’s swim teams competed against Washington
& Lee. The women had a 113-92 victory and are now 3-0 on the season; the
men fell 130-69 and are now 1-2 on the season.

5) Wrestling falls to Gallaudet
Swarthmore’s wrestlers fell 30-21 to Gallaudet on Saturday. The Garnet
Tide won every match they wrestled, but had to forfeit 5.

6) World sports roundup
After a 31-19 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Seattle
Seahawks are 82 and firmly atop the AFC West. …Two first-half goals lift
United to MLS cup. …Bobby Labonte wins the last Winston Cup race of
’99. …Woods managed to lock up World Cup for US with record
21-under. …Davenport beats Hingis for Chase Championship title.
