NEWS REPORT

1) ML Halloween party is on – Sharples out

It was reported in last Thursday’s Daily Gazette that there was a conflict
about
both the host and location of this weekend’s Halloween party. SAC and Mary
Lyons Dormitory met earlier this week to see if they could compromise.

SAC has decided to cancel its plans to hold the party in Sharples, citing
problems with the building as a space. Further, SAC has thrown its funding (in
the name of $1,000) to the ML party, which will be held Saturday night from
10-2. It will be a costume party, in accordance with tradition.

There will also be trick-or-treating in ML Sunday evening, sponsored by the
Dean’s office and open to the community. From 6:00-9:00 p.m. candy will be
available at every door in ML, and RA Christine Lattin promises they won’t say
anything like, “Aren’t you a little old to still be trick-or-treating?”

2) Cooper Lecture Series continues

Juliet Schor’s lecture, entitled, “The Overworked American” will speak in LPAC
Cinema tonight at 8:00 p.m. She is the second of the Cooper Lecture speakers
appearing at Swarthmore College this fall. The Lecture Series, entitled
“Rethinking Contemporary Liberalism: Critiques through the prisms of morality,
race, class and gender,” examines and critiques the state of contemporary
liberal individualism through the prisms of morality, race, class and gender.
The three featured speakers are prominent social scientists at the forefront of
important and timely debates surrounding the future of contemporary liberalism.

Juliet B. Schor is Director of Studies and Senior Lecturer in Women’s Studies
and Professor of Economics at Harvard University. She also holds a Chair in the
Economics of Leisure Studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. In
addition, she is an associate at the World Institute for Development Economics
Research and the United Nations Development Program. She is the author of
several books, including the best-selling and critically-acclaimed The
Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure and The Overspent
American: Upscaling, Downshifting and the New Consumer. The Overworked American
was listed by the New York Times as one of the ten best books of 1992.
Professor Schor’s writings appear regularly in scholarly publications and also
in popular newspapers and magazines. A Guggenheim Fellow in 1996, Ms. Schor is
one of the most visible and poignant social and economic critics writing today.
