Buchanan expected to forsake GOP for Reform Party after having failed
three times to win Republican presidential nomination; Trump also to join
Reform Party …More than 150 people have been killed and 400
injured in recent Russian bombardment of Chechnya. A Russian
military spokesman confirmed that an offensive is underway against
Islamic rebels trying to fortify their positions but insists that the
people are not under attack. Nearly 170,000 refugees
have crossed border into Ingushetia. …A U.S. teen who
fled to Israel after murder charges was sentenced by an Israeli court to
24 years in prison, one of the harshest sentences ever imposed on a minor
convicted of murder in Israel. He could be free in 14 years. …Florida’s
electric chair to be plugged back in for two death row inmates. The new
chair replaces a 76-year-old chair known as “Old Sparky”. …De La Rua
claims victory in Argentine elections with a 15-point lead over the ruling
Peronist Party, which has been in power for 10 years. …Clinton gives up
his idea of investing retirement funds from Social Security plan to break
a partisan deadlock.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Football falls to Dickinson after promising first half
After amassing a 14-3 lead at halftime, the Garnet fell 24-14 to Dickinson
Saturday. In the second half, Dickinson collected 21 unanswered
points. Ken Clark ’03 led the Garnet rushing with 84 yards, and Scott
Murray ’01 connected for 142 yards. Swarthmore is now 1-5 overall,
0-5 in the Centennial Conference.

2) Men’s soccer suffers OT loss to Franklin and Marshall
The men’s soccer team lost 1-0 in overtime to Franklin and Marshall
Saturday. Chris Milla ’03 turned away 10 shots. This is the second
straight game the team has lost in overtime. The team’s record is now 4-12
overall, 1-5 in the Centennial Conference.

3) Women’s soccer falls to Gettysburg
On Saturday, the women’s soccer team fell 6-0 to Gettysburg. The women are
now 6-11 overall and 1-7 in Centennial play.

4) Women’s cross-country places 4th at Seven Sisters
The women’s cross-country team traveled to Wellesley Saturday to compete
in the Seven Sisters Tournament. The team placed fourth, with Joko
Agunloye ’02 winning the race and Alissa Parmelee ’01 placing in
ninth.

5) Volleyball falls at Western Maryland
The volleyball team lost two on Saturday at Western Maryland, falling 3-0
to Western Maryland and 3-1 to Ursinus. The team is now 4-19 overall, 1-7
in the Centennial Conference.

6) World sports roundup
In the big news of the day, Yankees take Atlanta 7-2 in Game 2; it’s the
sixth straight World Series loss for the Braves. …Rams remain NFL’s only
unbeaten team. …FSU loses hold on #1 spot in AP Top 25. …Khannouchi
sets world record at Chicago Marathon with time of 2:05:42; he wins
$165,000 for his victory and an extra $100,000 for the world record.
