1) World news roundup

It appears that the Institutional Revolutionary Party will elect the
President of Mexico next year, as it has done since the 1920s, since
opposing groups failed to reach a consensus about running under a single
candidate. …Local-telephone call giant Bell Atlantic will ask Federal
regulators for permission to enter the long-distance market. …Democratic
Presidential Candidate Bill Bradley has announced his health-care plan,
which he claims will make health care available to nearly all uninsured
Americans. …The Supreme Court agreed Tuesday to decide whether Congress
has the right to open Federal courts to civil lawsuits “motivated by
gender,” such as rape and domestic violence.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Women’s soccer falls to JHU

The women’s soccer team lost to Johns Hopkins Tuesday. Despite 22 saves
from Emily Manetta the Garnet fell 2-0.  The loss drops the team’s record
to 3-5 (0-3).

2) World sports roundup

Sammy Sosa hit his 62nd home run of the season as the Cubs beat the
Phillies 8-2.  McGwire stands at 61 for the year.  …As for the NL playoff
picture, the Reds beat the Astros and the Braves beat the Mets.  This means
that the Reds now lead the Astros by one game for the NL Central title,
while the Astros have the wild-card over the Mets by 1.5 games. …49ers QB
Steve Young will sit out at least a week due to his latest concussion,
incurred Sunday.
