NEWS REPORT

1)  H.E.L.L. completes donation drive for hurricane relief donations

For the past two months, H.E.L.L. (HOLA En La Lucha/HOLA in the Struggle)
has conducted a food and clothes relief drive to aid hurricane victims in
the Caribbean and in Central America. Initially, the collection was started
to help victims in the Dominican Republican after Hurricane George. The
drive was later extended to aid victims of Hurricane Mitchell in Nicaragua.
Boxes to collect clothes were placed in the dorm laundry rooms and in
Parrish hall under the Hispanic Organization for Latino/a Awareness (HOLA)
board. The effort netted over twelve garbage bags full of clothing.

Also, over 270 meal numbers were collected in the two days before fall
break. The meals donated by students have been converted into
non-perishable food that will be sent to Nicaragua and the Dominican
Republic. The food items include canned vegetables and fruits, bottled
juices, and water. The items collected will be picked up by the Nicaraguan
consul tomorrow and by the Dominican Republic consul next week. H.E.L.L.
coordinator Lupe Jimenez ’00 said “We are very glad that the Swarthmore
community supported and donated to this relief effort.”

2)  Peaslee debate team qualifies for nationals

This past weekend, the Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society showed very well at
the University of Pennsylvania tournament. The team of Damon Taafe ’99 and

field of forty-eight teams. The debate national championships will be held
at Fordham University in April. In the novice competition, Andy Wong
’02/David Kamin ’02 and Colin Moore ’02/Allan Friedman ’02 were the second
and third place teams respectively.

The team of Taafe and Dolan is now ranked 12th nationally, while Friedman
and Wong are the 4th and 5th ranked novices. Said President Damon Taafe
’99, “Participation in the debate society this year has been by far the
strongest in recent years, and we always welcome new members.” Meetings are
held on Monday nights at 8:30 p.m. and Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. on the
third floor of Tarble.
