US BUILDS UP TROOPS IN IRAQ
Since Iraq’s refusal to cooperate with the U.N. weapon inspectors on
October 31, tension has been high. President Clinton told news services
that allowing Iraqi president Saddam Hussein to flout the will of U.N.
would only embolden him. Meanwhile, war ships headed towards the Persian
Gulf. Defense Secretary William Cohen ordered another dozen Air Force
fighters and bombers, more Patriotic air-defense missiles and 3,000
soldiers to the area. In addition, the State Department withdrew more than
200 nonessential personnel and their families from Kuwaiti and Israeli
embassies.
ISRAELI CABINET BACKS WYE AGREEMENT
The Israeli cabinet has narrowly agreed to ratify the Wye agreement reached
with Palestinian Authority and signed in Washington on October 23. The
17-member cabinet voted eight to four in favor with five abstentions. The
cabinet also attached a string of conditions to its approval. First, the
cabinet would meet at every stage to decide whether or not to go ahead with
the next phase. Next, Israel reserves the rights to annex the West Bank if
Palestinian Authority should declare an independent state. The Palestinian
National Council is supposed vote next month on removing clauses urging the
destruction of Israel. However, the first group of 750 Palestinian
prisoners will be released starting next week under the Wye agreement.

Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Ylmaz is being pressured to resign because of
accusations of a rigged sale of a state-owned bank and his possible
assistance to a businessman who has alleged ties with organized crime…
The Dalai Lama is considering responding to a conditioned overture by
Chinese President Jiang to reopen direct talks on Tibetan autonomy…
Ceremonies are being held across Europe to commemorate the 80th anniversary
of the end of World War I.

1) Men’s swim team takes out Franklin & Marshall
The Garnet won their first meet of the season 107-96 over Franklin &
Marshall yesterday. Individual races won by the Garnet include: 400 Medley
Relay by Keith Earley ’99, Fred Gerson ’99, Brandon Walsh ’00 and Ryan Fruh
’99, the 50 Free by Ted Scherer ’01, the 100 free by Fruh, the 200 back by
Earley and the 400 relay by the team of Ryan Muldowney ’02, Josh Farber
’02, Paul Dickson ’00 and Nik Johnson ’01.

2) Women’s swim team victorious over Franklin & Marshall
The Garnet opened the season with a 119-86 victory over Franklin &
Marshall. Alice Bonarau ’02 set a school record in the 200 IM with a time
of 2:14.32 and posted a national qualifying time of 2:29.81 in winning the
200 breast stroke. Amy Auerbach ’02 captured the 1000 freestyle and the 200
back while Claire Arbour ’00 won the 100 and 200 freestyle. Cathy Polinsky
’99 won the 200 fly and Mari McCrann ’00 won the 500 freestyle. The relay
team of Auerbach, Jenny Harvey ’99, Polinsky, and Arbour captured the 400
medley relay.
