VOLCANO COLLAPSE RAISES HURRICANE DEATH COUNT

Hurricane Mitch’s death count has risen to over 1000 following the collapse
of a volcano. The Casitas volcano in Nicaragua collapsed Saturday, causing
mud slides in ten villages, and burying between 300 and 1000 people by
various estimates. According to emergency workers, many hundreds of people
are still unaccounted for. Mitch was recently declared the fourth strongest
storm ever in the Atlantic, with peak winds of 180-miles-per-hour.

IRAQ-UN RELATIONS TENSE

Yesterday, Iraq refused to cooperate with the United Nations until current
UN sanctions are lifted. Currently, President Clinton and Defense Secretary
William Cohen are formulating the U.S. response to Iraq’s intransigence,
and likely considering the possibility of an U.S. attack without UN
support. However, Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan told newspapers
in his country that Iraq was unconcerned by the threat of a U.S. attack.

IN OTHER NEWS…

While in space for the fourth day, Senator John Glenn encouraged all
Americans to vote in tomorrow’s elections… Many of tomorrow’s state and
congressional races are hotly contested, with polls still inconclusive…
DNA tests indicate that Thomas Jefferson fathered the youngest son of his
slave Sally Hemings.
