On Friday, Septemeber 18, the Gazette reported a massacre of three families
in Baja, California. The killings actually occured in Baja California,
Mexico. Also, we reported that there would be a second showing of
Braveheart at 10:00 p.m.  There was no such second showing. We apologize
for any inconvenience that this might have caused.

1)  World news roundup

HURRICANE GEORGES THREATENS CARIBBEAN

Hurricane Georges, recently upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane, was
expected to hit the Caribbean late yesterday or early this morning. Around
4.6 million people were in the path of the potentially devastating storm’s
winds, registered at up to 150 miles per hour. The hurricane is rated
comparable to 1989’s Hurricane Hugo or 1992’s Hurricane Andrew, which both
caused extensive damage. The storm may hit the United States by late this
week.

MORE CLINTON TESTIMONY SET FOR RELEASE

The House Judiciary Panel plans to release further Clinton-Lewinsky
material at 9:00 AM today, including a video of the President’s August 17
grand jury testimony and 2800 pages of written evidence. Several television
networks will show the tape immediately after release, without any review.
In addition, many web sites plan to make the video available. The four
hours of testimony are reputed to show Clinton as angry and stubborn, with
less-than-flattering body language.

IN OTHER NEWS…

Ex-Malaysian finance minister Anwar Ibrahim was arrested yesterday after
leading at least 30,000 people in a peaceful street protest against Prime
Minister Mahathir Mohamad… Almost 200 people were killed by several
anti-Taliban rockets which hit the Afghan capital yesterday… Susan
Barrantes, mother of the Duchess of York, was killed Saturday night in a
car crash in Argentina.

SPORTS UPDATE

1)  Football loses season opener

The Johns Hopkins Bluejays blanketed the Tide 42-0 in the Swat football
team’s home
opener. Hopkins scored on their first two possessions and later capitalized
on turnovers to increase their point total. Donovan Goodly ’02 led the Tide
with
57 yards on the ground and QB J.P. Harris ’99 was knocked out of the game in
the third quarter.

2)  Men’s soccer extends losing streak to six

Number 1 ranked Johns Hopkins defeated Men’s Soccer 7-0 despite the Tides’s
valiant first half efforts, holding Hopkins to a single goal in that half.

3)  Men’s cross country loses to Johns Hopkins

Marc Jeuland ’01 finished second, Marc Nierman ’01 finished third and Gordon
Roble ’99 placed 8th as the Garnet Tide lost 23-34.

4)  Women’s cross country prevail

Women’s cross country defeated Johns Hopkins 41-18. Joko Agunloye ’01 led the
way with a first place finish, followed by Amalia Jerison ’00 in 2nd, and
Karen Lloyd ’00 in 3rd.

5)  Field hockey’s winning streak ends

Field hockey lost to Gettysburg 3-1, ending the Garnet Tide’s nine game
winning streak. Donna Griffin ’99 scored the lone goal.
