NEWS REPORT
1) Dead Dog Cafe packs the Mary Lyon breakfast room
Friday night, the Dead Dog Cafe opened its doors for the first time. Set in
the Mary Lyon breakfast room, the Cafe offers an alternative to Paces. It
runs from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Friday nights, with live entertainment
from the Backwater Wayne Miller Blues Band and featured “6 Cents”
performing on the opening night. The Cafe serves coffee, other beverages,
and desserts.
The Dead Dog Cafe was conceived by Chris Flood ’99, currently a Resident
Assistant in Mary Lyon. He had been involved in putting a foozball table
and a ping pong table in the breakfast room earlier this year, and
developed the cafe to add an alternative source of entertainment on Friday
nights. The other RAs agreed to let the cafe be run from the breakfast
room, and Gene Turk ’01, the Kitchen Coordinator, allowed him to use the
kitchen.
The first night was promising for the success of the cafe. Estimates ranged
from 60 to 100 people in the room at any one time. Students there near the
beginning and the end all described the cafe as packed. While Anna Hess
’00, who lives beneath in ML basement, said, “It was a surprise that I
couldn’t hear the music at all from my room,” Jennifer Tyson ’01, who lives
on the second floor, said, “It was too loud, and quite annoying.”
The coordinators of the Dead Dog Cafe are currently applying to SAC for a
stipend, so that they can offer free coffee and desserts one night a week.
The group is as of yet unchartered, but the attendance demonstrates that
they will probably be around for a while.

inquiry against Clinton within the next few weeks. According to the major
TV networks’ polls, Clintons approval rating remains at about 63 percent,
even while between 55 and 60 percent of the American public believe that
Congress should censure Clinton.
