Hiring

Learn journalism. Get paid. Work for The Phoenix.

Job descriptions
Application form

Putting The Phoenix together every week takes over 30 student editors, reporters, photographers and copy editors, in addition to a business staff that handles the newspaper’s advertising and finances. Almost all positions are paid. While prior experience with The Phoenix is a plus, all positions are open to any currently enrolled student and no experience is necessary.

Are you interested in working for us? We’re currently hiring for the spring 2010 semester.

How to apply

Either submit your application online or follow these instructions:

1. Read our job descriptions or talk to the editor in chief (Mary Prager, mprager1@swarthmore.edu) or the managing editor (Jeff Davidson, jdavids1@swarthmore.edu) to figure out what kind of position might be right for you. You can apply for multiple positions.

2. Download our one-page application form and print out a copy. Copies of this form are also available outside the mail room in Parrish.

3. We’ll need to know when you will be available for a 15-20 minute in-person interview. Please indicate (in the space provided on the application form) when you are available on each of those days.

4. For most positions we’ll also need 2-5 samples of your work, which should be attached to the application form. Journalistic work (writing, photography, editing, etc.) is preferred, but we can also accept writing samples of other kinds. Applications without work samples will not be accepted, even from students who have prior experience working with The Phoenix.

5. If you have a resume, please include a copy; however, there is no penalty for not including a resume.

6. Put the entire package of completed application form, work samples and/or resume in campus mail, addressed to “The Phoenix,” by December 7, at 3 p.m. Alternatively, you can submit your application online.

What happens next

Once you submit your application, a Phoenix editor will be in touch with you to schedule an interview.

All candidates will be notified by e-mail immediately following the appropriate hiring meeting. All candidates hired for positions in the fall should expect to attend an orientation meeting that will be scheduled during finals period so as not to conflict with anyone’s exams.

If you have any questions about any part of the hiring process, please contact the editors-in-chief.
