Hiring
Learn journalism. Get paid. Work for The Phoenix.
Putting The Phoenix together every week takes over 30 student editors, reporters, photographers and copy editors, in addition to a business staff that handles the newspaper’s advertising and finances. Almost all positions are paid. While prior experience with The Phoenix is a plus, all positions are open to any currently enrolled student and no experience is necessary.
Are you interested in working for us? We’re currently hiring for the Fall 2010 semester.
How to apply
Starting this semester we are going paper-less for applications. Follow these instructions to submit your application online
1. Read our job descriptions or talk to the editor in chief (Jeff Davidson, jdavids1@swarthmore.edu) or the managing editor (Sarah Pozgay, slong6@swarthmore.edu) to figure out what kind of position might be right for you. You can apply for multiple positions.
2. We’ll need to know when you will be available for a 15-20 minute in-person interview. Please indicate (in the space provided on the application form) when you are available on each of those days.
3. For most positions we’ll also need 2-5 samples of your work, which should be attached to the application form in a sigle Word or PDF document. Journalistic work (writing, photography, editing, etc.) is preferred, but we can also accept writing samples of other kinds. Applications without work samples will not be accepted, even from students who have prior experience working with The Phoenix.
4. If you have a resume, please include a copy; however, there is no penalty for not including a resume.
5. Finally submit your application online.
What happens next
Once you submit your application, a Phoenix editor will be in touch with you to schedule an interview.
All candidates will be notified by e-mail immediately following the appropriate hiring meeting. All candidates hired for positions in the fall should expect to attend an orientation meeting that will be scheduled during finals period so as not to conflict with anyone’s exams.
If you have any questions about any part of the hiring process, please contact the editors-in-chief.
