On Wednesday morning, an intruder was found rummaging through a student’s closet in a Willets dorm room. Although nothing was found missing, Willets RAs have already warned dorm residents against propping exterior doors and allowing potential strangers entrance.

At around 10 a.m., Ashley Miniet ‘10 returned to her 2nd South room after a shower. “I went back to to pick something up that I had left in the bathroom,” she said. "I had closed the door, but when I came back, it had been opened. My roommate had already left for class so I knew that it wasn’t her."

Miniet entered her room to find an intruder searching her roommate’s closet. “I said, ‘Excuse me, what are you doing?’ And then he said, ‘Sorry, I thought I saw someone in here.’ He said he was looking for maintenance applications. Then he said, ‘Okay, sorry, I didn’t take anything,’ and then he left.”

“I was pretty creeped out. I didn’t have the door locked, but then I just went to the bathroom, for goodness’ sake,” Miniet said.

Melanie Spaulding ‘09, another resident of the Willets hall, said that she was not entirely surprised that the incident had occurred. “I was almost expecting it because it seems like people are leaving the doors propped all the time in Willets,” she said. "Stuff like this seems to be happening more and more. It gets to be annoying how they can’t make this dorm more secure."

In an e-mail that she sent out to Willets dorm that day, Kristen Traband ‘08, the RA on 2nd South, urged residents to take additional precautions to prevent the event from recurring. “Please make sure to lock your doors when you leave the room for extended periods of time,” she said. "Also, if you notice an outside door that’s propped, please de-prop it. We don’t want anything like this to happen again."
