Last week, Swarthmore’s women’s Ultimate Frisbee team stuck out the weather to reach the semifinals at a tournament at the University of Delaware. The Warmothers made their presence felt on the first day of competition by winning all four of their games, each one over much larger schools: University of Delaware, the University of Maryland, Salisbury University and Towson University.
“Everyone really did well. We played great zone offense against Salisbury,” Anna Mello ’08 said. Strong performances on defense by first-years, especially Alice Evans ’10, helped secure the victories, most notably the 11-10 win over Salisbury.
The team was not satisfied with one successful day. As Sunday rolled in, the Warmothers started off the day by pounding Carnegie-Mellon University 15-8, even though the Warmothers lacked a full roster and many people were hampered by injuries or lacked experience. This win qualified the team for a semifinal match against local rival University of Pennsylvania. Though the team was unable to prevail against the Quakers, there was still a third place title to contend against previous victim Salisbury. “Sunday’s games were a lot scrappier due to the weather,” Evans said. Both teams decided not to play the game and rather let point differentials from the tournament decide the third place team, although Delaware had not made this calculation at press time.
