The Swarthmore men’s swim team knew it would have a tough home opener against NYU, the number one Division III team in the nation. In the end, the Tide lost to the Violets 117-80 on Nov. 19, but came back three days later to defeat Ursinus 142-73, to improve to a 2-3 record this season.
Led by two first-years, Swarthmore won all but four events in its defeat of the Bears. Tom Kelleher ’09 finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11 minutes, 5.22 seconds, and then won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.80. Douglas Gilchrist-Scott ’09 won the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in a time of 58.94 seconds. He also came away with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle.
“Against Ursinus, we swam well, and had a number of season-best and lifetime best times,” co-coach Mike Dudley said.
The Garnet came away with a relay victory in the 200-yard medley. The team of Andrew Herrmann ’08, Kaena Horowitz ’06, Brian Roth ’09 and Jonathan Augat ’07 won the event in a time of 1:45.43.
“Augat is getting faster,” Roth said. “There’s a new motivation in his life for him to swim faster and the results are showing.”
Stephen Shymon ’09, usually a distance-event specialist, swam to victory in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:53.86.
Jon Heagy ’08 took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.07. Jason Horwitz ’07 won an exciting 50-yard freestyle race, clocking in at 22.99 seconds.
“Heagy can swim just about any event,” Brian Rose ’06 said. “And Jason has had a great last couple of meets.”
Another distance specialist, Andrew Frampton ’08 tried his hand at the 200-yard butterfly, and won with a time of 2:08.92, his lifetime best in the event. Roth, who finished second to Frampton in 2:14.46, also swam his lifetime best in the event, according to Dudley.
“Frampton may not look like a big guy, but he’s a beast in the water,” Roth said.
Against NYU, the Garnet men had a few individual successes despite the overall team loss. Shymon and Frampton continued their success in the distance events as they finished first and second respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Shymon’s winning time was 4:56.86, with Frampton following him by only a second and a half.
“[Shymon and Frampton] train together, and have a little friendly rivalry going on,” Dudley said. “Both are close to each other in speed, and it’s great for Andrew to have someone to push him, which he didn’t have last year.”
Horwitz won the 100-yard freestyle, edging out the competition in a time of 50.13. Gilchrist-Scott placed second in the 200-yard backstroke. His time of 2:04.42 was fastest in the conference in the event so far this season.
“Right now NYU is on an upswing, but the meet was an opportunity to swim against some good competition, and also to mix up events,” Dudley said.
Swarthmore’s next meet will be this weekend at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational in Lancaster, Pa. Dudley hopes the team can end the semester on a high note by swimming well at this meet, which will feature a dozen schools and will mark the halfway point of the season.
“We’re all looking forward to the F&M invite. It should be a good training meet,” Horowitz said.
