With a new coach and a new set of captains, the women’s basketball team is sporting a fresh attitude as it embarks on a campaign to improve on last year’s strong 16-11 finish.

The Garnet have brought in new head coach Renee DeVarney, who boasts a strong basketball and academic resume, to head the squad.

The women will return Radiance Walters ‘06 and Karen Berk ’08, the top two players in both scoring and rebounding last year. All four of the team’s seniors, Walters, Jen Stevenson ’06, Debbie Farrelly ’06 and Cara Tigue ’06, will lead the squad as captains.

“It will be a good year for us,” Walters said. “We have to prove oursleves and show we’re the same team, and improve from last year.”

The majority of the Tide’s season will consist of Centennial Conference games, two against each conference opponent. In addition, Swarthmore will host Alvernia and Lincoln, and travel to Smith for the annual Seven Sisters Tournament.

While the first goal is to make it to the Centennial Conference playoffs, the Tide will be looking for revenge come February after suffering a tough loss in the conference semifinals against Dickinson last year.

The ladies will open their season this weekend at their own Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament with non-conference opponents Washington & Lee, Trinity and Mary Washington. The action will begin for the Garnet on Saturday at 4 p.m., when they face off against the Generals in Tarble Pavilion for the first round of the tournament. The championship will be held Sunday at 4 p.m.
