There seems to be no stopping the ferocious scoring machine we typically refer to as the women’s lacrosse team. This past Tuesday, it took over the game against Bryn Mawr with an onslaught of goals to win 16-4. “The team wreaked havoc with great intensity,” coach Karen Borbee said after her squad finished off the Owls in dominant fashion to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Bryn Mawr came out strong in the game and took an early lead, but it took less than a minute for Katie Crawford ’07 to even up the scoreboard. Before Bryn Mawr could muster up a response, the Tide scored five more goals after that tally, leading to 9-3 Garnet lead at halftime. The scoring was spread out as seven different Garnet players contributed to the huge halftime lead. “Everyone played hard,” Borbee said. “We made every play.” Indeed, everything was bouncing the Garnet way as Swarthmore continued its control over the match in the second half.
Ele Forbes ‘05 added three more goals to her two tallies in the first half, giving her a career-high five goals for the match. While there is no denying the Garnet certainly had its way on offense, the team turned in an outstanding game on both sides of the field. Cara Tigue ’06 covered Bryn Mawr’s top scorer like a glove as she held her scoreless the entire game. “Our defense played amazingly well as they shut Bryn Mawr down,” Borbee said. The Garnet lacrosse team revealed its balanced attack as it quickly stopped every Owl drive and held Bryn Mawr to one goal in the second half. Goalie Susannah Blair ‘08 stayed alert throughout her team’s scoring assault and recorded seven saves.
While the Garnet defense certainly stopped the Owls in their tracks, there is no denying that this was an offensive explosion for the Tide as it out-shot Bryn Mawr 49-18. “We were able to cause turnovers and capitalize on them,” Borbee said. Her team amazes weekly with its fast improvements and ability to make the needed adjustments during every game.
This squad is finding its winning design just in time as it enters the heart of its season with five consecutive conference games. The defense is stifling opponents and Blair is playing strong in front of the net. In turn, the offense has stepped up to provide plenty of goals every game as the entire team plays with a passion apparent in the full effort given until the final whistle. Look for the Garnet women’s lacrosse team to continue this spectacular play as it faces off at Muhlenberg on Saturday and in a heated rematch against rival Haverford at home on Tuesday.
